Raptor sketches

🦅 Hawk Yah! Drawing Raptors

Last month, Wild Wonder Foundation celebrated Rapt-Ober. This was a free class focused on drawing wonderful birds of prey - Raptors. Being the bird nerd I am, I had to swoop on in to be first in line!

I love birds, so I was thrilled about this class. Until now, I mostly sketched cute fluffy round ‘birbs’ (orb birds). Unlike birbs, Raptors are made up of strong, angular lines, with sharp silhouettes. Today, I would like to share my class notes and the fun drawings that go along with them!

First, we went over some guidelines for sketching these birds of prey fast.

We also got into the details of their bones and the shape of their beaks which was far more than I expected!

Then we went over hawk pants and their wings! I didn’t realize that when a bird folds their wings, you mostly see the secondary feathers, not their primaries. I always thought all the feathers were on display with their wings folded up.

After the class, I tried applying my learned knowledge by studying a Long-Crested Eagle. They have the funniest hairdos!

Hope you enjoyed and see you next time! Stay cozy!

P.S. - We are out of state till the 20th. If you buy anything from the shop (like this Fall Mushroom Set with 4 Pins) we will ship them the moment we are back!
