Getting Knotty with Celtic Knotwork!

This week we found ourselves diving head deep into the intricate interlacing of Celtic Knotwork! The goal is to incorporate the flowing interweaving patterns into a series of upcoming enamel pin designs.

Let’s get into the first 3 interlocking weaves I’ve encountered.

1. Freehand - The process is simple: First draw some squiggles. Then make them into bands. After that, follow the main rule of Celtic knots, over and under. Finally, allow this mantra to get stuck in your head. Over and under and over and under….

2. Grids - Create a grid and use circles to show connection points for the pattern. Use break lines to show where the pattern will not cross over. This sassy youtube British man gives a pretty good explanation on the topic! Check him out Here

3. Triangles - These play with different shapes and I love them for it. You’ll find these create a trinity symbol that can interlock with others.

Where this all going? Mandalas!

These used the free hand process. I like the process and look forward to experimenting and doing more using the other methods. 

The repetition and simplicity of Celtic Knots will be at the core of my next project. We’re drafting all the pieces and it’s all coming together nicely. I’ll be sharing details on it soon!
