Blobs are Life and how do they relate to Dragons 🐲

Blobs are one of the major pillars of my art. Ones that you might hold in real life. They’re how I start much of my work and I’d like to better my process. In “Designing Dragons” on Proko, one focuses down and manipulates these shapes as they are used in animals and how they might be combined into dragons!

Let’s be real here. A lot of what’s in there is boring. Slow, hard, and dull. I’m still going through the class.

Why? Well, I wanted all the juicy bits on dragons. Style shots and everything! Instead, I have a bunch of exercises tightly focused on form. They're repetitive and HARD! And the end results are not dragons.

One exercise expects the artist to take an animal reference and break it into many different shapes. After that, draw that same animal and those same shapes rotated. Easier said than done. It hurts. I can feel my mind stretching to fill the gaps. I’m slow and still getting used to all of this. The harder the battle, the sweeter the victory.

I’m about halfway through “Designing Dragons”. The tools provided are already making an impact on my work. Soon I’ll be making all the dragons. Also, my blobs have never been stronger.
