🐣Eggs-perimenting with Hummingbirds!

Greetings and welcome again to our creative nest!

Last time, we left off with the idea of designing a hummingbird dragon. A while back, I took a mini-class on nature’s hyperactive fairies, hummingbirds! Find it here on John Muir's: How to Draw Hummingbirds.

Fun fact: When hummingbirds aren’t zipping around consuming twice their body weight in nectar (relatable), these tiny dynamos go into a state called “torpor” at night. It’s sleeping…but with drama. Their heart rate goes so low that they look practically dead (O.O). Then at dawn? They start revving back up like a teacup motorcycle. Zero or one hundred. No in-between.

Let’s take a gander at some sketches from the class:

And that got me thinking...

Hummingbirds are territorial divas. All chaotic energy, chittering sass, and attitude. So what would a hummingbird dragon be like? Half the size of your hand but packed with speed, sparkle, and spitfire.

One sketch leads into another, and suddenly, I hatched this little guy!

My bird bar wasn’t full yet. So I doubled up! Two birds with one scone.

At this point, I couldn’t just wing it. I had to go full art mode. I printed it out for inking and markering.

 With all the patterns I’ve been playing with lately, this was a good place to eggs-periment.

Are they technically dragons? Debatable. 

Mischief-makers? Absolutely. 

This was a ridiculous amount of fun to create, and I hope it brings you a little joy too! Maybe it’ll inspire you to sketch up some birds of your own. The world is your nest.
