This week, I fell down a rabbit hole thanks to Fantasy Genesis, a gloriously weird book that turns creativity into a game.
Hereâs how it works: 1. Roll a die. 2. Consult the table. 3. Boom! Draw the result.
The Dice Decree: Caterpillar, Pineapple, Cracked Clay, Modern Skyscraper, Turtle, Lichen, and Fog.
Normally, I would choose two prompts and call it a day. This time I chose three! Caterpillar, Turtle, and Lichen. One great thing about this process is that it really gets the creative juices going.Â
I searched up references and dove into building my visual library for the three. Have you ever seen a Dragon-Headed Caterpillar? JUST LOOK AT THEM! I often forget how neat caterpillars really are.
Once I felt comfortable with the forms, I went right into inking the piece.
Â
For this piece, I chose colors that felt right in the moment. The result spokeâŚpsychedelic overload.Â
An easy fix. A quick green-tone intervention later, and ahhh yes. Balance restored!
Doesnât he look like a happy little chonker? I wouldnât have dreamed up this combination without a little prompting. Constraints breed creativity. Itâll be fun to dive in and create a few more of these in the near future.
Preorder PS: Weâve locked The Celestial Dragonarium surveys, but have decided to leave the preorder shop open for some time longer! Weâre knee deep in design files for submission to production. Woo! Check it out here!
